Dear Unlock Aid community,
Today, we’re launching an 18-month campaign to reform the way the United States partners with countries around the world to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. We need you to get involved.
Sustainable development begins when countries and communities have both the resources they need and the power to choose the solutions that work best for them. Decades of investment from philanthropy and the private sector have seeded thousands of social enterprises, local change agents, and other innovators who can help us leapfrog towards universal health access, global food security, pandemic preparedness, and build 21st-century jobs.
If funding starts flowing in new ways today, we’ll still have time to meet the SDGs by the end of this decade. The international community spends more than $185 billion annually on global development. The United States contributes $40+ billion of that, more than any other country in the world. But too often, too little of that money gets to where it’s needed the most – sometimes just pennies on the dollar – stifling the impact, innovation, and sustainability of these investments. This must change.
Last year, a bipartisan Congress passed the Biden Administration’s Inflation Reduction Act and the CHIPS and Science Act to make faster progress towards achieving the SDGs in the United States. That same level of ambition must be applied globally. As the world’s largest global development funder, fixing the way the United States spends its foreign aid dollars will have ripple effects across other bilateral, multilateral, and international donors, too.
That’s why today Unlock Aid and its partners are launching an 18-month campaign to unlock public resources to achieve the SDGs, starting with U.S. foreign assistance. Just 18 months remain between now and the next election to make it happen. Both parties in Congress and the Biden Administration want reform. Now is the time to act.
Count on Unlock Aid to:
Rally Congress to pass landmark reform legislation to shift public resources in new ways.
Call out large global development contracts that don’t comport with the future we need to build.
Celebrate the champions inside of government who are turning commitments into action.
This decade will be defined by our ability to embrace urgent change, make hard decisions, and break with the status quo. Now is the time to show the world that public institutions can move at the speed we need.
This week, dozens of Unlock Aid coalition partners from around the world will fly to Washington, DC to meet with lawmakers and rally support for visionary change.
But we can’t do this alone. Join us today and get involved. Achieving the SDGs by 2030 is the moonshot of our time.
To Progress,
Unlock Aid
uffff.
